First Altermagnet
Context: Researchers from India have discovered that Chromium Antimony (CrSb), a magnetic compound, is the first altermagnet to show a rare electronic behavior called Direction-Dependent Conduction Polarity (DDCP). This breakthrough opens new possibilities for electronics and energy devices by using a single material to perform dual functions.
What is DDCP?
- Most materials conduct electricity using either electrons (n-type) or holes (p-type) in all directions.
- DDCP materials conduct electrons in one direction and holes in another.
- This allows a single crystal to behave like both n-type and p-type materials, reducing the need for combining two different materials in devices like thermoelectrics and semiconductors.
Discovery by Indian Scientists
- Scientists from S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences and Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata, discovered CrSb’s unique behavior.
- Single crystals of CrSb were grown using chemical vapor transport.
- Two tests confirmed DDCP:
- Hall Effect: Measures the nature of charge carriers (electrons or holes).
- Seebeck Effect: Measures voltage due to heat difference; sign of voltage indicates type of charge carrier.
Findings
- Along the horizontal plane of the crystal: electrons dominate.
- Along the vertical axis: holes dominate.
- This confirms that CrSb shows direction-dependent conduction polarity.
What are Altermagnets?
- A new class of magnets where internal atomic spins cancel each other, so the material shows no overall magnetism.
- Still, they affect electrons based on their spin, making them suitable for spintronic devices.
- CrSb is now the first altermagnet ever found to display DDCP.
Practical Importance of CrSb
- Easy to synthesize using common materials.
- Stable and inexpensive, making it ideal for large-scale use.
- Can serve in:
- Thermoelectric devices (convert heat into electricity).
- Spintronic applications (use electron spin for advanced computing).
- Integrated circuits using fewer materials and smaller components.
Material Tunability
- Replacing 2% of chromium atoms with vanadium changed the behavior:
- The material became entirely p-type, as expected from theory.
- This shows that CrSb’s electronic behavior can be tuned easily.
Implications
- CrSb can simplify electronic design by performing the work of two materials.
- It may lead to cheaper, more efficient devices for computing, energy conversion, and more.
- This discovery positions India at the forefront of new material science innovations.
